damascening

Damascening is a decorative metalworking technique where one metal (typically gold or silver) is inlaid into another metal (usually a dark, oxidized steel) to form intricate patterns in highly contrasting light and dark.
Damascening first appeared in Damascus, Syria, and spread from there into Europe (Toledo, Spain was a primary center), and to China and Japan via the Silk Road.
