large round wooden shield used by multiple cultures throughout the mediterrenean but usually associated with Greek hoplites. It is dished and rimmed and on occasioned adorned or reinforced with a bronze sheet or blazon in the front. It is held by the use of an argive grip, in which the forearm goes through a large metal ring called a porpax whilst the hand holds a strap called a telamon
