Subsurface scattering is an optical effect where light partially penetrates and reflects within a material, often leading to an appealing colour change. Among museum objects, it is sometimes seen in delicate sculpture, where the material (e.g. marble or jade) has been carved thinly enough to allow some light to pass through.

This tag should be used for any image where a subsurface scattering effect is visible.
