Spandrels are the gaps formed between the apex of an arch and the structure it supports. In many architectural styles, the spandrel space will be filled with richly decorated panels. Unlike the arch below, spandrels do not bear any weight or contribute to the structural integrity of a building. They are a purely decorative feature.
