A ricasso is an unsharpened section of a sword blade, which allows the wielder to place their finger or hand further up the blade for extra leverage, or to shorten the weapon when fighting in very close quarters. The ricasso is typically located just above the sword's guard. Some ricassos have an additional guard above them (e.g. the counterguard on rapiers).
