German "Armor for Field and Tourney," circa 1560-1570.
This is a German "Armor for Field and Tourney," dating from approximately 1560-1570. Produced in Augsburg, a major center for armor production in the 16th century. It is rare as a complete "garniture," meaning all its original pieces belong together. It features etched bands that originally had gilded (gold-plated) decoration, of which traces still remain. It was designed to be versatile enough for use in both battlefield combat ("field") and tournament games ("tourney").
