Abbott Handerson Thayer grew up surrounded by nature in Keene, New Hampshire, and for the rest of his life sought refuge in rural places and fresh air. Even though he was part of the New York art scene in the 1880s, he lived with his family outside of the city in several towns along the Hudson River.
