The Imperial Roman period began in 27 BC, when a long and bloody civil war collapsed the Roman Republic and majority rule was replaced with the Roman emperors, starting with Octavian (later called Augustus).
The rule of emperors continued until 476 CE, when the final (western) Roman emperor was deposed.
